The Kedarkantha trek is one of the most popular winter treks in India, located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. The trek takes you through the beautiful Garhwal Himalayas, surrounded by stunning views of snow-capped peaks, dense forests, and vast meadows.

The trek begins from the quaint village of Sankri and takes you through picturesque hamlets and villages like Juda-ka-Talab, Kedarkantha base, Hargaon, and Sankri. The trail is moderately challenging, with steep ascents and descents through the forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron.

The highlight of the trek is reaching the summit of Kedarkantha, which stands tall at an altitude of 12,500 feet. From the top, you can witness breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding peaks like Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Black Peak. The summit also provides an opportunity to experience the mesmerizing sunrise and sunset, making it a photographer's delight. By Air: The nearest airport to Sankri village is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, which is around 215 km away. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Sankri village. It takes around 7-8 hours to reach Sankri village from the airport.

By Train: The nearest railway station to Sankri village is Dehradun Railway Station, which is around 185 km away. From the railway station, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Sankri village. It takes around 6-7 hours to reach Sankri village from the railway station.

By Road: Sankri village is well connected by road with major cities in Uttarakhand. You can take a bus or hire a taxi from Dehradun to Sankri village. The distance between Dehradun and Sankri village is around 200 km, and it takes around 6-7 hours to reach Sankri village by road.

 

Detailed Itinerary:

Day 1: Dehradun to Sankri

You will start from Dehradun in the morning and driven to Sankri, which is the starting point of the trek. The drive takes you through the beautiful towns of Mussoorie and Purola, and offers stunning views of the Tons River. Upon reaching Sankri, check into your accommodation and spend the rest of the day exploring the town and interacting with locals.

Day 2: Sankri to Juda-ka-Talab

Start your trek from Sankri after breakfast and follow a well-marked trail that takes you through dense forests of pine and oak trees. You will pass through beautiful villages like Saur, Talli, and Siltgaon before reaching Juda-ka-Talab. This beautiful lake is surrounded by towering mountains and is the perfect place to set up camp for the night.

 

Day 3: Juda-ka-Talab to Kedarkantha base

Today's trail takes you through dense forests of oak, maple, and rhododendron trees. You will pass through a few meadows and streams before reaching the Kedarkantha base camp. The campsite offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the beautiful sunset.

 

Day 4: Kedarkantha base to Kedarkantha summit

Today's trek is the most challenging but also the most rewarding. Start your ascent to the summit of Kedarkantha early in the morning to witness the beautiful sunrise. The summit offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks like Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Black Peak. After spending some time at the summit, start your descent back to the base camp for the night.

 

Day 5: Base Camp to Sankri

Today is the last day of the trek. Start your descent to Sankri after breakfast, and take the same trail you took while ascending. Upon reaching Sankri, check into your accommodation, and spend the rest of the day exploring the town and interacting with locals.

 

Day 6: Sankri to Dehradun

After breakfast, start your journey back to Dehradun, taking with you beautiful memories and experiences from the trek. You will reach Dehradun by late afternoon or evening, and can continue with your onward journey from there.
